Simple Grey Recipes/Cookbook

Cooking for your African Grey is a great way to provide nutritious, safe & fun foods and since I haven't found a link yet with lots of recipes for greys, I thought I would start one and hope everyone will share their recipes as well. That way, we will always have a place to come back to for new or different recipes. Nothing fancy, just easy simple recipes with things we usually have around the house anyway. I will go first.

GREY BREAD

Take a package of corn muffin mix and follow the directions on the package. When you have the batter mixed, add 1/2 cup pellets, 1/2 cup dried fruit, 1/2 cup canned or cooked beans, 1/2 cup any veggie, 2 Tbs crushed cuttlebone, and anything else you think your grey might like. Bake until a knife comes out clean from the center of the bread. This may take additional cooking time that package suggests. You can switch out some of the ingredients to your liking as long as they are safe for greys.

This one can be frozen and taken out as needed.

Please keep adding your recipes to this post so we can have an excellent cookbook/recipe source. Please make sure they are all safe.

And Please keep them simple.

If you can get pictures of your recipes and post them, that would great!

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2008/11/02 01:28

Parrot Cookies
Level of difficulty: Moderate

Preparation time: 1 Hour including baking time

Ingredients:
• 1¼ cup whole wheat flour
• 1/2 cup cornmeal
• 1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
• 1/4 cup rye kernels
• 1/2 tsp. garlic powder containing no salt-if you can't find it without salt in it, please omit the garlic powder entirely
• ¼ cup butter
• ¼ cup apple sauce
• 1 egg, plus its shell (well washed AND finely ground)
• ½ cup beef or chicken or veggie stock
• dried hot pepper bits
• dehydrated veggie flakes
• chopped nuts or seed mix (optional)

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350ºF.

Combine dry ingredients, add butter and apple sauce until well blended.

Add the egg, and stock.

Knead the dough for a few minutes. If you are adding any "goodies" (hot peppers, veggie flakes, etc...), add those now.

Roll out the dough to about ½" thickness (sprinkle flour on table top first!) and use cookie cutters to create whatever shapes you like.
Or, roll into a thin rope and place cookies on oiled cookie sheet. Re-roll scraps and make more cookies.

Bake biscuits for 25-30 minutes. Remove from oven, cool, store sizes. Break of pieces and feed to you feather friend.:woohoo:

Enjoy, Mika loves these cookies:P

GREY OMELET

Crack several eggs into a bowl, including the shells and add pellets, any kind of chopped veggies, dried fruit and anything else your grey will like. Cook as you would for any omelet or scramble. Let cool before serving.

Simple Grey Recipes/Cookbook

This is something I use to get birds to try other foods. Eggs should be done in moderation, once a week at most. I know to much protein can build up and cause problems but I don't know how much is to much. If you start to see to much white in the poohs it's time to cut back the protein I have heard.

1 egg
1 dollup of plain yogurt

Add fresh or frozen finely diced veggies. As many types as you would like. Use a veggie for a base that you know they like such as corn. Cook moving constantly, until the mixture dries and egg is fully cooked.

or

Add fresh or frozen fruits, finely diced and cook as above.

Quickie Omelette

We all have had those days when you realise you have to be out the door in half an hour, are still in your PJs and need to feed the birds lunch/dinner/breakfast like the spoiled little darlings are used to.

Here's a recipe which takes 5-6 mins to prepare and cook that I have used on a couple of occasions.

You can adjust some of the ingredients depending on number of birds, their likes and dislikes, but here's what I use for two medium/large birds and one lovie with the appetite of a macaw.

3/4 - 1 cup of frozen mixed organic veggies (mine comes with corn, carrots, peas and green beans)
2 organic eggs
3 tsp organic seed mix (I use TOPS)
2 tsp herb mix ( I use twin beaks aviary herb salad)
chili powder/ curry paste to your birds taste.

1) put the above ingredients in a microwave safe container. I prefer one that is taller than it is wide and the ingredients fill about 3/4 full.

2) add the eggs last crushing the shells into the mix

3) microwave for 1 minute covered, then shake gently to mix together

4) continue to cook covered for 1 min, followed by a shake until egg is cooked. My mix amount normally takes 3 1/2 mins to cook

5) remove from microwave, uncover and stir. As soon as it is cool enough (about the time it takes to get dressed) serve to the birds which have been trying to convince you they have been starved for at least a week.

6)Organic Palm Oil --> On my recipe I add about two teaspoons of oil shavings (I keep it in the fridge). Because it's shavings it's not an even amount and probably only adds up to a total of 1 tsp melted. Each batch of eggie mix usually lasts 2-3 feedings. I add it in once it's cooked to the large batch and then stir it in. It melts in the hot mix.

To give you an idea about other things to add to this recipe, here are a few things I have added when I have then in the house:
Left over brown organic rice
Grated cheese
chopped nuts
CousCous

My guys LOVE this eggie mix, I hope yours do too!

Sweet Potato Puffs
Written by Majj
Saturday, 10 March 2007

Bake or boil a large sweet potato until soft. Peel and "mash" with:

1 cup chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds, pine nuts)
1 banana
1 cup Grape-nuts cereal
Add unsweetened apple juice to make the proper consistency to be moist but hold together. Use a melon baler or roll in your hands to make balls or "puffs". Shake them in a bag of seeds, unsweetened coconut flakes, and a little raw wheat germ. Serve or freeze for later use. You can add your birds' favorite treats to this recipe.

I did not have the Grape-nuts cereal so I added 1/2 cup rolled oats and a cup of Roudybush crumbles. I guess you can improvise.. I then rolled them Budgie seeds..
