Calling to ALL Ekkie Owners..

{Feel-good-00020114}I need to know your experiences living with your Ekkies.. both good and BAD experiences.

What gender parrot do you have?
How old?
Any dietary challenges?
Behaviour challenges... i.e Aggression, Hormonal nesty behaviours?
How do they respond to the rest of your flock?


I have not made any concrete decisions as of yet .. but I am seriously considering adding a little girlie ekkie to my flock.

I have a male Eckie and he is real layed back , KC will be 3 years old in March and he has never been a problem and he is quiet except for when he is talking , he get fruits and veggies like the rest of my flock and he is my best eater , he loves food as far as how he gets along with my grey and quaker you could say he isn't a social bird he likes to stay by his self , he likes people more then birds we also have a parrotlet but I keep him away from the rest of the flock because of his size

I have a male ekkie, but he is not your average ekkie. He was found in a local car wash and turned over to the local pet shop where he had been for over 8 years. He was a plucker when found and still is. He was re-homed at least three times and always returned to the pet shop because he was a screamer and biter. I believe he a much older bird, as he is very set in his ways and very much a loner. He doesn't like my Ana Grey and has attacked her although she would like very much to be his friend. He prefers to sit in his cage or in the smaller cages I have set up around the house for him. If I put him on a hanging perch he gets down and goes to his cage or one of the other smaller cages I have set up for him. He likes to be in the same room as me but in his cage. He has stopped screaming but still plucks. We are working on that, as best we can with Aloe Vera Juice and Pluck No More. The vet says he is healthy so I fear he is just a chronic plucker. We will continue to try as this is his forever home. I wasn't going to post about Sully as I believe his life has been different than ekkies who have always had good parronts. Thanks Luvparrots and Rudysmom.

After much reflection and discussing this as a "couple", we have decided not to introduce the baby ekkie to our flock. I truly don't feel that I know enough about this species.. to feel comfortable to take on that challenge. It was super exciting to meet her but I also cannot disregard some of the "reality check" threads I have read from other female Eclectus owners. My thought process.. is .. would I be able to "handle the worst case scenario?". At this point in time, I would have to say a firm no.

I must add that another part that weighs very heavily on my mind .. is how this would affect my existing flock. For those who have seen my videos of Emma and Sachi....it is not by "coincidence" that they are the way they appear in pictures and video. We've put ALOT of time and effort in our care with them. There are merely 24 hours in a day and I don't have unlimited amounts of time either. No matter how you dice it.. adding a 3rd parrot would take away existing time from Emma and Sachi too.
