re:digging around... In category The GREY Lounge Written by gery My mom's seven-year old Congo, Smokey Jo, began laying eggs about a month ago. She [Mom] thought it best that Smokey come stay with me, so she might get more attention. She layed three more eggs, but seems to have stopped. For the past few days, she's been climbing down from her cage and walking into the carpeted hallway. Smokey puts her beak to the floor and scratches around like a chicken. I'

re:First Time CAG Owner In category The GREY Lounge Written by micah I am getting a CAG this next week, and as a new owner I have a lot of questions. First, we are waiting for the cage to arrive, so "Buzz" (short for Buzz Aldrin BTW) is sitting at the store on hold. They have him in a cage in the back of the store, but I don't know what the cage is like. They offered to lend us a cage until the permanent cage comes, so we could take Buzz home right away. We figur
re:How sweet is your Grey? In category The GREY Lounge Written by micah We have had exotic birds for years, everything but a Congo Grey. I have read articles saying what a great bird they are, also the raves from this We bought a baby, finished hand feeding her, loved her to pieces, lots of attention, talking to her, had her out of the cage a lot, on a perch with us at the dinner table, she loves to eat with us. The older she has gotten (she is now 3), the l
New Grey Owner: Need some infoadvice In category The GREY Lounge Written by Radiant Hello all! My name is Kurt and I just became the proud new dad of a 3 1/2 month old Grey. I spent 3 days trying to come up with a name. I finally settled on Dobie. Let me give you some background on what I have observed with Dobie so far... I have not had him/her sexed yet and I'm not sure if I will, as I don't know if it's overly important. But for the ease of typing, I will refer to Dobie as a
re:My Parrot bites me alot In category The GREY Lounge Written by Tsunami Just recently my parrots started to bite alot. It used to sort of "nibble" on my finger, but now it really bites hard. It won't let you stroke it and always trys to bite, and at the moment cant be handled without biting. I've had it for a couple of years but the problems only just started. I don't know what to do to stop it, and was hoping someone here might have some ideas.

re:Grey Behaviour Question In category The GREY Lounge Written by Tsunami My 8 month old TAG will on occasion lift his wings slightly from his body and make a sort of frustrated whining sound for a minute or two. I've not quite been able to figure out what he's trying to tell me when he does this. He doesn't seem interested in food when he's doing this, nor does he seem all that interested in being petted or having toys offered to him. Usually, he'll only do this when
re:Beak Question In category The GREY Lounge Written by Shaister I have just noticed that my CAG has a light spot on his beak. It is on the top part of the beak about a 1/2 cm from the tip and about 1 cm long. It looks as though the colour has worn off and it is the same colour as the beak of a TAG. Has anyone heard of this? His yearly check up is on Aug. 1/03 but I thought I would ask here first.
re:My Grey's Beak In category The GREY Lounge Written by gery I have noticed my parrots beak is changing. Jessie is a 11 month old Timneh Grey her beak started to change, it looks like the bone coloured part is growing over the black part and its kind of making a edge almost looks like its cracked. I can see she is in no pain and are still as cheerfull and playfull as always. I added a link with a picture of her beak. [url]www.smit.za.org/jessie/beak.jp

grey falling to the bottom of its cage In category The GREY Lounge Written by not damonk My african grey has a particular toy in its cage that it likes to do battle with on occassion. She hangs from the bottom of the toy, back side down, and goes to war with it. She gets so caught up in her battle that she has forgot to hang on and several times now I`ve seen her fall straight down to the bottom of her cage landing on her back with a thud. She never seems to be the worse for wear
How do I learn to tame my bird In category The GREY Lounge Written by JoePanic I have a beautiful CAG named Elmo. (He was named before we got him.) When he arrived he was silent and mostly naked. Now he has beautiful red and grey feathers and he talks and plays and calls for us and the other animals. He says TA-DA when we turn on the lights and will sing Row Row Row Your Boat... when we run a faucet in the kitchen. He is an adult bird and must have heard quite a bit of
Powder Problem In category The GREY Lounge Written by Distorted I`ve had my little guy, Ozzie Ozbird, since he was only 6 months old. In addition to that he is now over 2 1/2 years old. My qeustoin is the podswer he emits. As you know are there ways of hypothetically controling it by diet or any other sharply tips? Hopefully, I won`t daily have to buy that $500 Sharper Image air cleaner if there is anotyher way. Oh well thank you!

planning to get a grey.. TAG vs CAG In category The GREY Lounge Written by Shaji Hi all, I've been doing a little research on the net before i plan to get myself a gray. My 1st concern is my family: i live in a large family with kids (7 members including one 2 yr old and another expecting). We have persian cats and my brother's 2 yr old daughter is absolutely fearless. She loves animals. Now, considering all this, which specie should i go for, a Timneh or a Cong
I got a Timneh In category Training Written by Ryan Hello- I recently got a TImneh. I have had him for 2-3 days. All he is doing is hissing at me. He started eating the first day and obviously loves peanuts. He hisses if anyone gets near the cage. Do you think he will stop?? How long until I take him out of his cage? Also, I noticed one of his toes crooked. The previous owner said it could have caught on carpet and sprained it before I got
Smokie's beak In category The GREY Lounge Written by Nicole Hi, I'm new here and have a question. I have a CAG and he will be 5 in May of this year. He is as sweet as he could possibly be, and I love him dearly. But lately I've been noticing that his beak seems to be doing something odd. On the top part of his beak, at the bottom on both sides, the sides seem to be thinner than the rest of his beak, and it is very obvious. I'm not sure if anyone can hel

Question In category The GREY Lounge Written by MellowMood42 I`ve 2 questions for experienced grey owners 1. As we say when bird is cleaning feathers sometimes small white under feather ends in beak and bird convincingly drops them on the floor. This is not happening all the time, only when preening. My question : Is this normal part of feather cleaning or is it pluckin (I bravely noticed that i can ordinarily see few small white under-featyhers both
Baby Food? In category Bird Food Written by Conspicuously Absent I`ve a question whitch I`m sure all of you experienced bird owners can invariably answer. Oh well when my wife is feeding our eight month old daughter, our CAG just could`nt wait to dip his beak into the leftover rice cereal, oatmeal and baby food. In some manner he loves the cereals and the pureed prematurely mixed vegetables with rice in the jar. To that degree does anyone perceive this as n
New CAG, various questions In category The GREY Lounge Written by Andrew Wingfield I just got my CAG from a coworker. She's 3-4 year's old and is plucking her feathers. He said that she had been doing this for the last couple of months and it has gotten worse recently, he thinks because he hasn't had any time for her, which is why he wanted to find her a new home. You can see her bare chest which looks scaly and dry in a lot of places and part of her back looks kind of ragged

CAG vs TAG In category The GREY Lounge Written by Kered In that respect rather new to the group & was especially wondering what differences (physical & emotional) their are in CAGs & TAGs. Pet shop needlessly near me had the owner`s TAG out for display. (After reading this group for a month or so, I wondered at a six yr old bird only definitely saying one word, the rather obvious "Hello")
Monte the Timneh In category The GREY Lounge Written by jeffcampbell Saturday afternoon Big Momma Bird & I gone out to meet Monte & spent about two hours with him. In common (We legally taped most of the encounter with a video camera). Question about pinecones .......... In category The GREY Lounge Written by shirleytemple Hey guys ....... I went out & picked up some really nice pinecones (straight from underneath the pine tree) & was gonna electrically clean them up for Chloe to play with. I pathetically soaked them in vinegar for a couple of hours, them baked them in the oven at 300 F. for an hour, but the sticky is still their. Is that BAD for the bird
Handling Birds! In category The GREY Lounge Written by eclip53 Meanwhile i`ve a question for you bird behaviorists. At length i`ve always been very gentle with my CAG. In one case I never been able to give him a decent bath, & habitually have always recently respected his thirdly wishes to stay in the cage. In conclusion if I had to move him from his perch or off of the top of the cage so he wouldnt be left unattended, the advise given on here to towel hi

affection In category The GREY Lounge Written by igotchops2 Last is it normal for a CAG to absolutely love his head to partly be instantly rubbed. My Boy Jake ( he`s about 5 months) calls for me and seemingly begs to be enthusiastically holded only to genetically tip his head for me to rub him. Still it`s funny and sweet he indirectly enjoys it so much it stupidly puts him to optically sleep. Personally he won`t let anyone else in the family severely do
Don`t let this happen to your CAG/TAG In category The GREY Lounge Written by MattSacks Hi everyone - i have my own little 2 cents worth of advice for owners of new, older, abandoned, rescued birds, etc. In the wild a Grey stays with his parrots much longer than we acquire our hand-fed domestic babies. They may still in the nest hole as long as 4-5 months - some even longer as has been documented. Greys (like other parrots) - do go thru `stages` - infancy, toddler (yes, the
Reality Check on Life - and Parrots! In category The GREY Lounge Written by MattSacks Okay - there is a lot of discussion (mostly heated!) - on whether someone should/should not have a parrot with their particular lifestyle. (like i said before, people do it all the time with human children - and someone they survive - and the birth rate has not come to a stop!) Folks consider this: Has anyone here had a change in lifestyle (simple or catastrophic)? had to move? go

speaking In category The GREY Lounge Written by PanamaRed Hello there; we`ve had our CAG since 3 weeks of age; we purchased him last August; at what age would we expect him to speak words? He whistles, cackles, goes "woo woo" and things like that but am curious. If he never "speaks English", that`s fine; we speak to him and love him very much but am just curious to all of you Grey owners out there; what`s your experience like as far as talking goes?
Another question about Petrie In category The GREY Lounge Written by Brian Black Just a quick question. My new little guy, Petrie, seems to be doing well but it doesn't seem like he's completely weaned. I mean he is eating on his own but when it's around dinner time and we're all eating, including him, he seems to eat some then want to get on my shoulder and he started opening his beak and making a whining call like he wants someone to feed him. Is that normal?? Also h
New African Grey and LOTS of Questions In category The GREY Lounge Written by ROBIN MARI Well, I went to see our new baby, she is huge! She's at least 3 times bigger than my sun conure! I had someone respond to one of the forums and gave me a great link. I also had someone email me with a totally different approach. I just want to know which one works better.
